Parliamentary Secretary for Health Mark Butler met with health industry professionals at a health reform consultation at Canning Division of General Practice in Perth, Western Australia, on 20 January 2010.
Contributors to the discussions included GPs, allied health professionals and Division of General Practice staff.
Significant issues discussed at the consultation included:
- Key timeframes for reform
- Patient access to private specialists and linkages with reform of the public and primary health care sector
- State government involvement in the reform process
- Aged care funding and access to GP and specialist services
- Funding levels in the community sector
- Potential new models of governance in the health system
- Continuation of funding for chronic disease management programs
- Access and equity issues for particular patient groups
- The Indigenous health initiative, Closing the Gap, and how it links with the proposed reforms
- Multidisciplinary and integrated primary care
- Adolescent and Indigenous mental health
- Nurse practitioners and their role in general practice.
