Notre Dame University, Fremantle
On Wednesday 20 January 2010, Parliamentary Secretary for Health Mark Butler held a roundtable health reform discussion at Notre Dame University in Fremantle.
Deputy Vice Chancellor and Provost, Professor Mark McKenna, chaired the consultation and the participants included staff from the University’s School of Medicine.
Topics discussed included:
- Cost pressures on the health system and containing these pressures in the future
- Workforce shortages
- The suggested separation of emergency care and elective surgery
- Mental health services, particularly the need for better integration with primary care
- The future of residential aged care and the need for increased funding
- The need for dedicated funding for research into the health system
- The cost of delivering dental care
- The potential impact of climate change on the prevalence of some diseases.
The discussion also covered the need to allocate a greater proportion of funding to preventative health care.
