Primary Health Care Forum, Parliament House
24 representatives from peak stakeholder organisations with an active interest in primary health care attended a Primary Health Care Forum with Health and Ageing Minister Nicola Roxon at Parliament House, Canberra on Monday 23 November 2009.
The Minister was welcomed by Dr Tony Hobbs, Former Chair of the Expert Reference Group for the National Primary Health Care Strategy.
Topics discussed with Minister Roxon included:
- The importance of a more integrated health care system focussing on the needs of patients
- The potential future role of regional organisations and comprehensive primary health care centres
- The importance and challenges of measuring quality and performance in primary health care and the need to carefully consider pay-for-performance measures
- Issues around the scope and role of health professional registration
- The need for flexibility in funding and models of care, including for rural and remote and marginalised populations
- Education and training of our future health workforce including allied health.

The implementation plan provides details of implementation activities over coming months and years, including timelines and major milestones to implement the major health reform agreed by COAG in April 2010.
On 19 and 20 April 2010, an historic agreement was reached by the Council of Australian Governments, except Western Australia, to the establishment of a National Health and Hospitals Network.
