Mount Isa Base Hospital, Mount Isa
On Wednesday 27 January 2010, the Minister for Indigenous Health, Rural and Regional Health and Regional Services Delivery, Warren Snowdon, held a health reform consultation at Mount Isa Base Hospital, in North Western Queensland.
The 27 attendees included staff and representatives from the hospital, Queensland Health, the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Mount Isa Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service, Kalkadoon Aboriginal Sobriety House Aboriginal Corporation, Mount Isa Centre for Rural and Remote Health, North West Primary Health Care, Yippippi Indigenous Health Council and Oxfam.
Mount Isa Mayor John Malony, State MP for Mount Isa Betty Kiernan and Queensland Senator Joan McLucas were also present.
Significant topics discussed included:
- The impact of chronic disease, including the benefits of an emphasis on preventative measures
- Lack of access to comprehensive primary care
- The need for better integration of primary care
- Inequality of access to health care in rural and remote areas
- Rural and remote workforce issues.
Minister Snowdon toured the medical, maternity and pediatric wards of Mount Isa Base Hospital prior to the meeting.
