Medicare Locals – after hours primary care responsibilities

Medicare Locals will be tasked with a range of after hours primary care roles and responsibilities so that all Australians, regardless of where they live, are provided with accessible and effective after hours primary care services.

An initial role for Medicare Locals will be to undertake a needs assessment to identify gaps in access to after hours primary care within their region. Medicare Locals will then develop and implement a plan to efficiently and effectively address the priority gaps identified during the needs assessment. This plan must build on existing face-to-face after hours arrangements and make best use of the available local health infrastructure.

From 1 July 2013, Medicare Locals will administer additional after hours funding to further improve access to after hours care, ensuring that communities across their region have suitable after hours services in place.
